Upcoming Des Moines Area Events

Check out some things that are going on in the Des Moines Area this week. As always, you can keep track of different events and times by clicking on the calendar on the right hand side of the page!

1. Dallas Center Fall Festival

When: Friday, August 23rd 4 pm – 10 pm & Saturday, August 24th 6:45 am – 10 pm

Where and What: This is a family event! There will be a parade, 5 k run, rides, games, food (including a chili cook off), pie auction, music, and so much more to keep you entertained! There is also the Dallas Center Farmers Market Friday evening! Check out here for the schedule of events and activities.

2. Sweet Corn Festival 

When: Friday, August 23rd & Saturday, August 24th 10 am- 10 pm

Where: Christ the King Catholic Church in Des Moines

What: Did you miss out on the Adel corn festival? Here is your chance to try some great Iowa Sweet Corn! Friday evening will be more geared towards adult with pizza from Bordenaro’s and live entertainment. Saturday morning they will kick off the day with a Kid’s Fun Run and 5k . The rest of the day there will be LOADS of fun entertainment for everyone including pony rides, games, kids tent, lot so of live music, and of course SWEET CORN! 3. Ingersoll Live

When: Saturday, August 24th 2-11 pm

What: This event is free to attend and is geared towards children and adults. It is a way to draw people to the Ingersoll Avenue area to check out the different businesses. There is entertainment, food, rides, and other activities for the whole family. For more information about the Ingersoll area and Ingersoll Live check it out here.

4. Mercy Stork Affair 

When: Saturday, August 24th 9 am – 1 pm

Where: Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines at the East Tower Conference Center

What: Are you expecting or know someone who is? This is an awesome opportunity to learn a lot and receive a lot of information regarding pregnancy, breastfeeding, car seat safety, and so much more! You can interview and meet a pediatrician and/or obstetrician. You can stop to make sure your car seat is installed properly by the experts. You can meet and ask questions to the Doulas. There are also classes available for breastfeeding and baby proofing. There is also no registration required. Check out here for times of certain events and what else is going to be happening!

5. Altoona Palooza

When: Saturday, August 28th 8 am – Midnight

Where: Sam Wise Youth Complex – 1000 8th Street SE

What: Interested in playing and/or watching a little mud volleyball or participating Palooza Cross?! It will be dirty! They are currently still taking sign ups if you are interested! They will also have a Kids FREE Fun Zone loaded with games and inflatables along with food and drinks. To sign up for the mud volleyball or the Palooza Cross check it out here.

6. Hanson

When: Wednesday, August 28th at 8 pm

Where and What: Remember Mmbop?!? I sure do and remember LOVING Hanson! It’s your chance to see them this upcoming week at the Simon Estes amphitheater. They are performing for Nitefall on the River with Paul McDonald. Tickets are also not crazy expensive like they used to be in the day. Check out here for ticket information.

7. Reno Memorial Dog Park Dedication 

When: Wednesday, August 28th at 6 pm

Where: 3533 E Douglas Avenue in Des Moines

What: Yes! There is something for you and your furry, four-legged friend to attend this week. Reno Memorial Dog Park is already open, but this will be the formal dedication of Des Moines’s third dog park. This dog park will honor and be in remembrance of Reno who served on the Des Moines Police Department in the K9 Unit. On the evening of the event, if you are licensed through the city of Des Moines, you are able to check out the park for free! After this event, a permit will be $20 a year and you will have access to all three Des Moines Area dog parks. Check out here for more information and a list of the other Des Moines dog parks.
